Outreach lecture for third-year nursing students

2026-07-14
On Tuesday, July 14th, we conducted an outreach lesson at Nakatsu Municipal Toyo Junior High School, where nursing students taught junior high school students. As part of their "Basic Nursing" course and as part of their "Saving Lives" course, third-year nursing students taught life-saving first aid using AEDs to three classes of third-year junior high school students.
Our students looked nervous before the visit, repeatedly checking the details and feeling anxious. However, once they split into three groups and began their lessons in their respective classrooms, they seemed to be able to explain and demonstrate in a way that befitted their senior status.
The junior high school students listened attentively and with interest, and actively participated in learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). They shared comments such as: "I learned that checking the surroundings is important at accident scenes," "CPR is more difficult than I thought," "I was surprised that you have to press quite hard to do it," and "If I see someone who has collapsed, I want to help them."
Through this outreach lesson, I hope that students will be able to take life-saving actions with a little more confidence when they encounter an emergency situation. For our students, it was a valuable experience to learn a lot about the difficulties of communicating and teaching, the procedures and communication involved in working together, and above all, to have fun interacting with bright and energetic junior high school students.
